I remember my friend burning a bunch of emulators for the Dreamcast back in the day and got to wondering if you could pack up your nes homebrew and make it autoboot straight in.
I found an emulator open source called nesterDC and paid my friend to make the changes. It was using a really old compiler for Linux but he managed to figure it out and now it's possible and really easy to set up.

The added benefits to this are that producing a Dreamcast game is much cheaper than a NES cart and you don't need a chipped Dreamcast to play homebrew.
the Dreamcast homebrew community is also quite active.

I just tried to download the NES to Dreamcast program and my PC flagged it as malicious software, and wouldn't let me install. I assume the program is safe to use.

It's safe. I've successfully used it without any issues.

So I just tried to burn a NES file to a CDR following your tutorial. When I go to burn the disc, ImgBurn gives me an I/O Error. I know you mentioned that you got an error when you first tried it. How did you fix it?

It's written on the error message itself (you need to download a file that is on the official imgburn website... and place that file into the imgburn folder)
