Completely New To This

Might as well say hey before I start combing through everything and inevitably get lost and confused like a small dog. I have absolutely no experience at programming/coding/etc. Other than playing games, I'm just good enough at computers to be able to Google and mess around until I fix whats wrong or accomplish what I need done, that's it. That's actually how I found this forum and NESmaker, just searched how to make a NES game. I thought it'd be a cool gift for my kids for me to make them there own game(s) where they are the protagonist in them, figured the old school style of NES would be a (relatively) easier to try and do and the NES cartridge would be a awesome form factor. Just picked up the program and looking over the first tutorials just to familiarize my self a bit before diving in trying to learn it.

So cheers, let's make some fun games, some weird games, some bad games, but in all some NEW games.

Welcome to the forum!
I think NESmaker is a great way to bond with your kids and create fond memories.
I'm looking forward to playing your demos if you share them with us.

ErkekJetter88 glad to have you here with us.
It’s a great tool to have fun with your kids.
I spend hours with my 6yo son on NESmaker.
He already made 2 games (KUBO) and is working on his 3rd ;)
Have fun!

Thanks for the welcome. And that’s awesome dale! I’m hoping once I get the hang of this and the kids see their games it’ll get them interested in learning too. I’m just now getting familiar with it, kinda just repeating the tutorial but with different things and trying to do it from memory. But I can already tell this is a blast.

You're doing great. Repeat the tutorials, change the graphics, add new monsters, try some different actions, design your screens... my son loves that. First, he was watching me, then I let him placing tiles on screens... then, he started drawing monsters, levels, ideas, ...
We worked together on his first game, during last year summer vacation and he learnt how use nesmaker (make tiles, monsters/npc, screens)

I do the scripts and bug fixes ;)

That’s too cool. This probably the best place to ask, but how can I try out other people’s games? Would love to try others creations and get some inspiration.

People share their demos in the showcase section under WIP: http://www.nesmakers.com/viewforum.php?f=51
and under Finished Games & Demos: http://www.nesmakers.com/viewforum.php?f=52

You might also want to try the game entries from the Byte-Off 2019 competition: http://arcade.thenew8bitheroes.com/
You can play them online, but I would recommend downloading the roms and playing them in an emulator of your choice: http://vizivasoftware.com/nes/ByteOff19_ROMS.zip

At the moment it seems linking urls doesn't work so you'll have to copy and paste them.
