Bowels of the Beast

Here is the Metrovania game I am working on. I call it "Bowels of the Beast". An army of aliens go to a desolate planet to mine minerals only to find out the planet is a living being that mutates the army into crazy mutants! The main character, "The Green Flash", is immune to these mutations. He must race against the clock to destroy the Beast from within its twisted insides. Things I want to work on are: #1. A timer that counts down. If it counts all the way down The Green Flash will die. #2. Mutant death animations. I still haven't found a way to give my mutants a death animation upon a kill. #3. I want to make a HUD that contains a timer and The Green Flashes' Health Bar. It is definitely a work in progress. More to come in the future!

I've tried couple of these metroidvania style games with timers and I have to say...
Timer and RPGs let alone metroidvania doesn't really go so well together even with time reversal ability like in Vision Soft Reset.

While I'm sure you have an idea that sounds good in mind, I'd personally advice against combining the two elements.

Anyways, I wish for the best and success for your project.

I think the inclusion of a timer is fine as long as there is some in-game justification for it (the obvious one being oxygen supply), and plenty of "safe zones" to replenish said timer (think of the save rooms in Super Metroid). These would help make sure that the player doesn't feel cheated when they die from the timer running out.

There is a tutorial here for adding death animations. I recommend reading through the entire thread. It's a hassle, but search the forums thoroughly for your issues, since most of us encountered them aleady: https://www.nesmakers.com/index.php...nia-monster-damage-and-death.6689/#post-34486

And this should get you started on the countdown timer: https://www.nesmakers.com/index.php?threads/solved-4-5-9-countdown-timer-in-maze-module.6510/
Yes! Thank you! I will be reading through these threads for sure!

The Bowels of the Beast is evolving nicely. Here is a little gameplay. Tons of bugs still like the hit detection on my mutants can get crazy sometimes. I'll jump way over them then I'll take a ghost hit after I land. I'll have to mess around and figure that one out in the future.
