Byteoff - 2020 Brutal review and personal taste winner

Now this is going to be brutal and honest opinion of the winner of the Byte-off 2020.
If you are one of the sensitive types who doesn't like brutal honesty, I suggest you to look away and not read what I've got to say. Or rather... Write-

Anyways, here are few ground rules. Brutal honesty is not here to set you down but to help you improve and help you do better what you do.
Considering that you are not intentionally pushing out garbage and I WILL call it out for being such.

It is also flavored with my own deranged sense of humor so don't worry, I am not going to go full Gordon Ramsey on this but hoo-boy, do I have a word or two to say?
I do. I've got 50 games to rate and review so this is going to be one busy night.

1.
1000 Stars - Fuvka games

As I started the game, Music and title screen instantly reminded me of Ocean/Mindscape's NES 'era games.
It can only mean one of the two things. Game is either decent or as awful as movie licenses of that area used to be.

And sure enough, game was decent enough to actually play.
While graphics aren't anything noteworthy, music is actually pretty nice.

Aside for being apparently a complete game, I cannot really compliment it being entertaining or fun.
It just... Is...

I did beat the game and I wish to congratulate you and I wish you will have a healthy son.

2.
2600AD - Crazygrouptrio

What can I say? It's technically space invaders with 3 enemy vessels on screen at once, ice physics and really repetitive music which feels like a water torture in a long run.
Game works but it is far from pinnacle of entertainment. As the name implies, it came from Atari and you can probably find a copy of this game from
Atari landfill among with all the E.T copies it still harbors.

2/5

3.
A simple platformer game - LCM

Now this is certainly an odd little cookie to crack which greets you with repetive gameplay of single stage and taunts you with DYK messages to play same stage
over and over again. It's not as much fun as it is curious game which flips it's gameplay over it's head after a few play through.

At the end of every level you are greeted with treasure and dapping until game decides to collapse on itself as an ending screen.

Worst thing is, I can't really say anything bad about the graphics either since they were intentionally designed the way they are.

Was it fun? No... But it most certainly did it's intended purpose and wasted your time.

2/5

4.
Allison of Astra

How not to start your game? With a wall of text with pointless ramble which really doesn't contribute anything to anything.
From what I gather this is apparently supposed to be an adventure game. To which I'd really suggest put more emphasis on more detailed graphics.
There's not much to do or say about this one due to how short it is. I can't really even compliment the game on it's humor either.

It might be on point once the project is finished and might find it's niche heart warming audience but as for now, it's not much.

1/5

5.
An Elf's Tale - Chris Bardley

I suppose this is NES maker's first christmas game or so I would imagine.
Because why not. Every console needs it's game based on a holiday season.

While title screen is very boorish, I do have to complement game for being rather colorful despite consisting lots of white as you might imagine.

If I were to describe this game somehow, I would say it's poor man's Zelda. It has the elements minus fun, especially when you reach the first dungeon
which hugely suffers from rinse and repeat syndrome with lack of enemy or puzzle variations. Just kill same old enemies to progress till you reach the boss
or start screaming at screen for game to stop repeating itself.

It also ain't very enjoyable to read bunch of uninteresting billboards which really doesn't have anything important to say.

Good effort but still needs much more polishing, interesting enemy variations as well as puzzles, other than retrace to fetch an acorn.

3/5

6.
Ashen House - Crazygrouptrio

Now this is a game I find really interesting as a concept. Plus the fact it reminds me of Phantom fighter at it's core.
Graphics and sound design are really nice and I really love it how doors open at Sweet Home style revealing a threat inside.
Creepy atmosphere and encounters also adds to the charm.

With more polish on the combat system, more enemies and having NPCs to interact with, we might have an actual timeless cult classic for the NES maker at hand.

4/5

7.
Attack from Planet X - Crazygrouptrio

Now ugh... Could the title be any more cliché than that? Only Mars Attacks sounds more generic than a 60's budged B movie.
What's worse, the game is very self aware of it's own existence.

Anyhoo... Game's music is rather nice and it is nice to see that you can actually interact with people.
Graphics ain't half bad either to be honest, however... Game gives you a weapon that's completely useless against enemies.
Sure it stuns them but doesn't do much else.

Now due to game being short I cannot give any proper scoring for the game but at least concept itself has it's heart at it's right place.
Despite crashing and screenlocking here and there. Only future will tell if this is actually a good game or B budged trash.

3/5

8.
Boxgame

Okay... But why though?
This has to be some trolls idea of a good time. This is literally something you scam people with
on a steam sale and despite not spending a single penny on this, I still feel scammed.

It's nothing more but a single screen game where you travel through highlighted labyrinth to a flag and you get simple message "You win"
That's that. Or the game crashed. Still, even if there was more, I most certainly don't want to see it.

0/5

9.
Brayden Bech tolds FLC - Bray Bray

I don't know why but this game gives me NES Barbie vibes. Drawings on the intro screen seems decent enough so gudos for artistic talent.
Game itself however is a different can of worms. Everything looks bright and boorish right down to a character designs which at worst
blend in to the backgrounds themselves which is a big no no when you design an NES game.

Main character's animation is also stiffer than my right knee that hurts as much as the color usage of this game hurt my eyes.
While art design is pretty good, sprite art most certainly doesn't live up to the hype.

When after a lot of dialogue you get a sword, it's bright pink box that doesn't even work right. When I stab down, sword appear above the character sideways.
Now I can give the game a benefit of a doubt and blame Mesen on this but I hardly think so.

What's worse, you can actually get stuck in to the walls when you enter from one room to another.
Grammatical errors doesn't really win the game any favors either, though I have to admit translation in a lot of NES games back in a day wasn't really top notch either.
But when you are trying to immerse player in to a wall of text and some sort of story, at least ask someone to proofread the content first so you don't end up with
"Your him, again" or "Your no hero" There's is a famous quote I'd like to borrow when it comes to handling your and you're but unfortunately I think it'll break more rules
than one in this site. But the important thing is, it is important to know the difference between knowing your hero and knowing you're a hero.

Also, unavoidable two pixel traps? No... You just don't do that. You just do not put a player in to impossible situation like that.

Now... The game tries. It really tries I give it that and music ain't bad either.
But enemy and over all graphics design could use for an overhaul to be way more pleasing to the eyes.

Final note. NES just isn't really a console for artsy, narrative driven games.

3/5

10.
Breakfast of Champions - Justin Francoeur

Now while the art style and humor is cute, this game is... Well... It's okay but not very interesting.
And certainly far away from becoming NES maker's mascots.

Two of the first "boss"'es are sorta interesting but third one is just down right impossible.
Maybe there is a way to deal with him but I'm not going to figure out how.

Concept is alright and graphics are alright but game itself isn't much as of now.
I suppose you could say humor is fitting for 80's cereal mascot but, eh... Mine's darker than that.

2/5

11.
CoOperating - Mihoshi

This most certainly is a game that was made to impress and show-off right from the get go.
Intro graphics were impressive colorful and massive.

Also title screens music reminds me heavily of Activision's Wizards and Warriors which I like.

Puzzle elements in the game are alright and graphics and rooms are actually interesting and pleasant to look at.
While the game is short, it shows a lot of potential of being a great co-op as well as single player puzzle game
if and when honed to it's finest and this is coming from a guy who'se puzzle solving skills are that of a handicapped chimpanzee.

Claudia's Adventure - Voltopt

It looks graphically so horrible I could swear I puked up in to my mouth a bit when I stared at the first screen with shocked expression in my face not expecting anything special.
It sounds musically terrible and very unimpressive to a point my ears began to hurl while I was wondering who could commit such genocidal level atrocity towards world wide musical talent.

AND I BLOODY LOVE IT!!!

This is one of those games which has the feeling of early day NES adventure games which you'd expect to be terrible from the get go but once they open up to the player,
they actually show a world bigger than what meets the eye. On the surface this game might not seem much but on the inside it is actually a really, really good.

Like Kid Icarus, or Cosmo police gallivan or... Or... Heck, Jikyuu Juuden Debias, Metroid, you name it!

Wether by accident or by pure intention, this one actually manages to be one of the most interesting and mystifying games I've played on the NES and I hope that the creator
has enough interest to finish this metroid style undersea adventure exploration game.

It's actually been a long time since I've been surprisingly impressed by something that's so hideous it's actually charmingly grows in to me through it's lore and gameplay and exploration elements.
It's all so basic yet so enchanting that I can't help but want more.

5/5

13.
Caged Fury - Old school interactive

Now here is a game that reeeeeeeeeeeeks of LJN and comic licensed games.
Interestingly enough graphics are impressive and comic stylishly cartoony but gameplay is a caged beast of it's own nature.

I tried... I really tried to beat the first opponent but no matter what I did, I just couldn't do it.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if this battle is even winnable but even as a proof of concept, you really need to throw player a carrot.

While graphics are impressive, gameplay and music is just bad and the fact that first enemy encounter seems to be so unforgivable doesn't
win this game any favors either.

This is a proof of a concept that great graphics doesn't always make a great game.

1/5

14.
Chaos Between Realms - FJgames

Title screen looks nice and intro sequence most certainly doesn't leave your balls blue.
Even a child could see that there's a lot of effort put in to this and it shows. Graphically and musically game sounds and looks absolutely stupendous.

Now only if the game didn't crash for what ever reasons every five minutes, that'd be great.
Getting stuck on dialogues is also a huge issue which I realized just now that it might not be because of the incompetence on the programmers part but because of the
NES maker being... Well... What it is and it seriously needs to publish a patch to fix that.

Aside for a lot of bugs and glitches, I could easily see this game being official NES Byte Off 2020 winner.

But's that's exactly it. Despite looking great otherwise, the game indeedly is riddled with bugs and glitches which makes it suffer from great overall great design it has
which heavily affects the overall great design and effort put in to the game itself.

I hope to see this game finished and bug free somewhere in the future.

4/5

15.
Chrono Knight - Artix

Impressive titlescreen for sure and graphically impressive dialogue screens but overall the game is
pretty boring and not very entertaining despite it having actually pretty good music

Let's be blunt... You just DO NOT make a player to fight randomly moving portraits no matter how impressive they might be.
Faster than light movements with ice physics doesn't earn your game any favors either.

1/5

16.
Chronomancer

I have no idea what the heck is up with this game...
Anything I do seems so random and backgrounds makes me think of NES Hell's bells...

Not sure if I can complement them or condemn them down to deepest pit of earth's core but one thing is for certain.
Sprite artist this game's creator is not.

This game just made me confused and hoping for an explanation of what I am actually witnessing in here.

1/5

17.
Curse of the Shadow - Eric Wiggins

Now here's a game that's excellent mix between Battle of Olympus and Faxanadu.
I like the overall world and effort put in to it and... Well, the concept as a whole.

While music ain't great, the character animation brings back many good as well as painful memories from my past.

For a demo, there are a lot of work put in to this and I hope to see the project finished somewhere in the future.
Hopefully with a way better and charming town music mind you.

4/5

18.
Drunk Time Traveller's Fiancee - Zappa

I'm pretty sure the designer of this game was just as sober making this game as I was writing this review.
Concept is silly but charming and while the game ain't anything really special. But one thing is for sure, who ever made this game has
watched Bill and Ted's excellent adventure way too many times and is now reflecting on through this brainstorm of his.

Graphics and music are good but other than that. The game has very little to offer from overall okay;ish platformer.

3/5

19.
Ducksoma - Ultranarwhal

What instantly strikes in this game is it's introscreen. It's bright, colorful and looks nice like lingerie on a beautiful model.
Just like the game itself, it indeedly is bright and colorful. Graphics are nice, detailed, cellshaded and they make sense so
they most certainly are nice and polished to look at.

Puzzles are alright but there are some bugs and glitches that leaves much to be desired for.
It also doesn't help that player has to do the unthinkable and use "down" button to launch so called projectiles.

Aside for visually impressive graphics, there's still lot to be desired for from the grand design of things or being anywhere
the quality Konami/Namco games used to be back in a days.

However, it's a good effort but still needs a lot of polishing from being perfect platform puzzle game.

3/5

20.
The Fateslayer

This game was either intentionally made to hurt you or it's some 5 year old's first project...
I am having hard time to tell which is it but at worst, it's some vicious 5 year old's project to intentionally hurt you visually as well as auditorily
and that kids knows exactly what he or she is doing in guise of pleading innocence due to ignorance and young age which I cannot do anymore.

But, with a benefit of a doubt. If this is some very young kid's first project. I am very sorry but you still have much to improve and there are
very helpful sites and people to help you to improve your skills and I wish all the best for your future projects when you mature and get better a bit.

Don't let this review and review score let you down.
I am sure that with great effort you will do great in the future and earn my selfish 5 stars out of 5 rating.
Even my first projects weren't great either and I am ashamed of reflecting upon them.

However, if you are some adult who made this... No... Why? And no! Shame on you!

1/5

21.
Forgotten in Time

Aside for okay graphics and nice music...
There is literally nothing to this game. It is impossible to review something that doesn't provide more than an intro screen.
Why would you even make an entry with this?

0/5

22.
Fox Hunt - TolerantX LTD

Intro immediately reminds of some early 80's japanese famicom games.
Music is alright but that green background most certainly doesn't do the game any favors.

Despite of somewhat boorish graphics on certain parts of the game, music is actually pretty enjoyable and puzzlish elements are alright.
I can see that game somewhat tries to be like Adventure of Lolo even though it's nothing alike but I can give it credit for trying.

Game itself ain't bad but leans heavily towards impossibility factor especially if you don't know what you're doing.
It works, it ain't something that makes you want to hurl but could most certainly use some refining towards final product to make
puzzle elements more interesting.

3/5

23.
Guard Game

Wow...
Aside for my eyes saying ouch, graphics made me think of Dragon Slayer... Or Dragon Warrior.
Music ain't an ear tease to listen at either. Game uses bright background graphics colors and character model colors that doesn't compliment each other at all.
Everything is difficult to look at. At this point I'd rather look directly at sun or at gas welding flame which would probably damage my eyes less than this game does.

Anyways, the game is very short poor man's Zelda. Not very interesting and not much to look at.
Whatever the creator has in store for this game, he/she most certainly needs to take a look at color spectrums that compliments each other without hurting player's eyes.

Iconolast

While the music is great, the game itself cannot be complemented the same way.
Game suffers from same issue as the Guard Game but also manages to completely reverse the issue by using too dark color palette.

Apparently the demo is short as well as it is prone for crashing.

1/5

25.
Klepsydra

What is up with this title screen?
It tries to be impressive but misuse of colors is just terrible to look at.
Sometimes I wish it's just my Mesen messing with me but considering these games mostly only work on Mesen I find it hard to believe.

Musically and graphically game sounds and looks alright but gameplay isn't much to cheer for.
It is boring auto-scrolling flying game with not much to challenge player for.

However I do give the game credit for making projectile impact feeling rather pleasant however the stage, enemy and boss designs most
certainly leave much to desire for especially when it comes to difficulty of the game.

Gallant effort but still a long way to go.

2/5

26.
Little Flame

While it's most certainly a rare thing that you get to play as pyromaniac flame, this game most certainly ain't very interesting or fun at all in that matter.
Stage designs and graphics as well as musics are just boring at best.

Intro screen doesn't impress much either though fire hydrant was sorta amusing to look at.

2/5

27.
Magbilo - Dalyen Games

I have literally no idea what this game is supposed to be all about or what to do in it... I'm am stuck at the first three screens available...
Why would you apply this? I suppose it tries to be some sort of maniac mansion type of adventure game, that much is clear but there is literally nothing to do.
Or if there is, I just don't get what it is that I am supposed to do.

28.
Master of Time - Baardbi

Now this is a nice surprise. You are greeted with pretty nice intro screen and nice piece of music.
In fact all the music in this game is pretty pleasant and adventurous to listen at. If anything, it has this certain MSX2 vibe to it.

Character graphics looks goofy but in it's own charming way it works.

However the game is riddled with bugs and issues that hinders the experience the most.
While gameplay works and graphics in general are alright, more than often I find myself being stuck in screen loop which hinders
otherwise should be pleasant experience which I presume creator wanted to give the player.

Alas, yet again. Another rathe masterful piece foiled by glitches, bugs and screen locks up to your pretty buttocks.

Can't say if this is a fault of a game creator or the NES maker but aside for the game's mistakes, I would have loved to complete the journey
and yet again wish that game's creator sees enough effort to finish this project and make it glitch free in a future.

29.
Mess Maker

Uhh... I cannot say I am familiar with how much difficulty it is to make prehistoric MS-Paint on NES Maker but I've most certainly have seen better...
Heck... I'm certain I've seen better art programs on Atari 2600 and this is just my memory probably playing tricks on me...

1/5

30.
Minotaur Game

When a game instantly gives me Action 52 flashbacks, you know that you are doing something wrong...
But at least the music is nicer than anything that A-52 could provide. Sorta reminds me of Wizards and Warriors 3.
Too bad the game itself fails to deliver the same experience and I am not much of a fan of Meat Boy style games.

1/5

31.
Monster Slayer - Fire Storm Studios

If you want a visual and auditorial seizure from the get go. Here's your game.
What's worse, you'll need to press left to play. Why? Just... Why?

Graphically and musically the game is as terrible as it gets.

"I like shorts, there easy and comfortable to where. Especaily compaired to pants."

At this point... I am just staring myself from a mirror and asking myself...
If anything could get any more black, how much more black it could be and the answer is... None... None more black...
Just like my life and it's bleak future about dreams and hopes I had as a child...

And the game forces me to read this before I can go on.

Yet at the same time game delivers me with a line

"I like pants, they are comfortable than shorts and they look cooler."

Why game? Why are you so cruel to me?

Aside for that atrocity towards mankind, I tried to see if there is anything interesting or impressive what this game has to offer
and the unfortunate answer is no... It is as boring as it gets. Sometimes I wish I could ask for monetary refund for wasted time
but I don't think that is going to be a thing anytime soon. Otherwise youtube would have lawsuits up to it's buttocks for
wasting people's precious seconds.

32.
Odyssey 1156

Now this is a curious little pickle. I like the graphics, premises and overall of it but unfortunately the game itself
is broken to a bone riddled with screen locking glitches and such.

While I love the world, graphics music and curious world around this game, unfortunately I can only review it only as an idea that is probably good
but needs some heavy work to work right.

It might also be my Mesen acting up but yet again, I doubt it.

Keep up the great work and I hope to see fully playable version of this game someday.

2/5

33.
Overclocked - Sam Y

I have no idea how this game is supposed to work... Maybe there is a trick to it but I most certainly haven't figured it out...
My only guess is that this game was created to spite humanity as a whole.

34.
Paws N' Play

Now this is a nice little puzzle game with alright graphics and music.
While I wasn't able to finish the game it was most certainly rather entertaining and also quite a bit difficult towards later puzzles.

It's not completely refined but it has a good idea behind it and once it's forged to it's perfection, it might actually be one of the better games
released by NES Maker.

4/5

35.
Paws of the west - Pigeonaut

Now here's a game with most impressive cutscene graphics for sure. Whoever is responsible for the graphics, most certainly has earned a chocolate bar or two.
Or a proper wage for his/her talent.

But that's about it. I can only phantom why would you make all black and white game for NES.
Music is ear piercing but game itself is fine despite it's demo status.

I would however seriously suggest adding some color to the graphics. This ain't Gen 1 Pokémon were talking about in here but an NES game.

3/5

36.
Platformer Text Adventure

I Uh... Nope...
Just... Nope...

How am I even supposed to rate this one let alone give it a proper review?

??/5

37.
Platycat - Logana

Now while I'm not a big fan of games where you just simply cannot stop due to character having severe ADHD, this most certainly ain't one of the worst games I've played.
But not one of the greatest either.

Let's just hope nobody gives that cat a cup of coffee or he starts running so fast his feet takes off the ground.

2/5

38.
The Prying Eye - Cuttercross

Now this one is a curious piece of a pickle.
From what I gather it is an adventure horror exploration game in style of Shadowgate and Uninvited but with hide and seek mechanics that hasn't been
implemented yet. Graphically game looks great and music works for what it's worth but for now, there isn't much to do except to look at creepy smiling
face which results demonizing your screen with static noise.

On a proof of concept level, the game does seem interesting till there's some actual gameplay in there it is hard to give it a proper score just based on as an idea.
And I have no idea how the developer plans to add two player mode on this kind of game unless guns are involved which is possible considering player has
a health bar. Though the game does get extra points for adding possibility for two player mode despite it's unlikely usefulness in the game itself.

Rescue Time - SJ games

As I started playing this game, the intro screen with disappearing bearded man and plagiarized Back to the future style logo made me think of two things.
This is either going to be terrible or it actually has something interesting to offer.

And surely enough, music and graphics weren't much to lister let alone look at.
Now sure, I am used to bland looking backgrounds and graphics with very simple music like in Chubby cherub or... Pooyan... Ugh... Just the name itself makes me hurl...
I mean, not everyone is a talented sprite artist or musician so you'll have to work with what you have.

But as we've seen before. Graphics and music ain't everything.
It's the gameplay and stage design that matters, right? Well, unfortunately aside for time traveling mechanic, there isn't much that would impress in there.
Platforming is as basic as it gets, pieces were just randomly put here and there without any real planning other than you can reach the areas you are supposed to reach.

Even as a proof of concept, it wasn't very interesting at all.

This is probably one of those reviews I am going to regret later on down the line when I figure out this was done by a kid but...
Eh... You may complement yourself on the fact that you've actually figured out how to use famitracker and made a working game with a tool I am still trying to figure out how it work.

Rick Starfield

This is actually pretty interesting looking game with graphics that reminds me of games like Rad Gravity just to name one.
Gameplay is alright and humor and has this Space Quest style of vibe in it plus the game features pretty amazing star effect after you are done defeating the first monster.

Now the dialogue seriously needs some honing.
"You got you're zapper back. Press select to choose you're weapon but keep an eye on you're ammo. " I mean seriously... You got you are zapper back?
This is some major "Uh oh, I feel a sleep." level of translation monstrosity right there back from 80's.

Just because we are trying to emulate games from the late 80's and early 90's doesn't mean we need to do it down to a bone along with
terrible translation and horrible grammar.

Now there are few glitches here and there but that is just to be expected as I've noted playing through many of these byte-off games.
I would have liked the Demo being little bit longer and featuring at least second type of enemy to punch in to a face but other than that,
it was a pleasant proof of concept and I'm hoping to see full game somewhere in future.

Rumblefest89 - Jurassic Sunset Games

Okay I admit. This game officially made me chuckle out of it's ridiculousness.
So good job. As the game is nowhere good and barely resembles as wrestling game which I uh... Presume it to be to an extend?
It seriously lacks in complexity. Idea itself is alright and takes nice inspiration from games such as Punch Out, M.U.S.C.L.E and WCW,
it most certainly lacks of certain polish it requires to be the NES maker's first sports game which every kid had in their NES library but I hated with passion back in a day
because I wasn't and still aren't interested in sports games despite there being few exceptional exceptions that actually felt like fun games.

Now this ain't exactly a fun game but it has it's certain charm in it's simplicity to be that one game that everyone must have but I absolutely loathe.

42.
Shadow animus - Dustin Huddleson

Why yes. We cannot have a NES game library without someone greeting you with a fursuit now can we?
It's one of those adventure horror games with exploration features. Walking up and down as well as aiming the projectile ain't very well executed especially in a format
that has x and y axis movement that's not a TMNT or Double Dragon kind of game at the slightest where it would make sense blowing a fire right in front of you.
Let alone have it climb up when you're moving upwards.

There's also hide and seek element that's hinted at the game but as for now, not needed for if the enemies don't outright drag you in to the darkness and do... Uh...
Things to you left for imagination, those hiding spots are mostly useless. Maybe at some point those tree trunks will come in handy but as for now, not as much as they're hinted as.

Generally graphics are alright and music is too but game itself doesn't offer much in terms of being fun actually interesting or fun.
It is an alright effort but still has lots to be wished for at the end.

This demo could have actually used for a monster to chase you at least but I was never able to discover one aside for enemies that drags you in to the bushes and
drops you by the entrance once once they are done with what ever they do.

43.
Spacewalk 3030 - Cramer

While I'm not too much in to puzzle games, this one is pretty alright.
It is one of those simple coordination puzzle type of games you find your sister playing from hours on end when she decides it's time to hog the nintendo for herself
or you just play out of boredom because there ain't any better things to do. Like Adventure of Lolos. Minus the factual puzzle elements.

Idea is simple but effective as tetris. Not very complex game but it works as a time waster till you wait for a next big Justin Timberlake concert to start to express your love for him.
Or you just enjoy having a seizure every time you defeat a level...

Sparkle Banda Rainbow Hunter

I don't know if the creator of this game is colorblind or making an LGBTQ statement but it is absolutely horrible to look at.
Everything is a brightly colored messed brimmed with colors that most certainly doesn't complement each other in any way they should and it is just causing me nausea
and terrible headache in a way that'd I'd feel much more comfortable looking at sun without going blind or having it melting my eyes.

I seriously can't tell what anything is or is supposed to represent because it is difficult to look at the screen as a whole.

I can't even tell what I am supposed to be able to stand on and what not nor what to do because of the terrible color combinations.
Only thing I can tell is that creator of this game probably hates gamers and wanted to make something to get right back at them for reason or another.

As I've already stated before, when a game greets you with wall of text it can't be a good thing...
Dialoque graphics looks decent enough but reading something that I don't really care about.

Especially in a game that tries to be like Gradius but fails miserably due to poor controls.

As much as I'd like to compare this game to a Choujikuu Yosai - Macross, which was pretty barebones gradius alike game,
this game doesn't reach even that level of competency. You don't have 4 directional RPG controls on a shmup, you just do not do that no matter how limited
the tools at your hand are.

This is literally one of those games that reminded me of Action 52 and that's never a good sign.

Thalassophobe - Kale Menges

Aside for having no idea what Thalasso actually means, the title screen actually looks pretty nice for a change.
I can appreciate the nice bubbles floating up and nice oceany background. Title screen text is pretty innovative and looks good too.
This seems like it might be a competent game for once.

Which I'd be wrong about since you can die like in Silver Surfer. Anything you touch kills you.

It's a shame too since this is really nice looking game and has had a lot of effort put in to it's graphics.
However, graphics alone doesn't make a good game, just visually appealing and when it comes to gameplay, this ain't really a good or fun game at all.
It also doesn't help that weapon decides to work whenever it feels like it.

Aside for nice graphics and pretty enticing mermaid statues, this game has little to no entertainment value and is quite frankly a boring game even for a shmup.

47.
The Box - Craig's Warehouse of soft Tupees

This is actually one of the more interesting concepts presented during this Byte-off.
But I have no idea how to play it correctly. No matter what I do, the guard is trigger happy and riddles a single box with bullets faster than
John Rambo can get kill count on vietnamese soldiers.

It also doesn't help that the game glitches after first times getting shot at.

Idea itself is interesting and sorta funny but game itself still needs a lot of work.

48.
Turtle Pain - Joe Sherman

You get greeted with some rather nice and calming musing, which is actually a welcome change for all the horrors I've been going through
writing this miserable review just to announce my personal winner and... Well... It's not really a game but an early day NES art program.

To be honest, quite nice one too featuring a pretty lady you can almost color as you like and a turtle.
This so called "game" also has few different pictures which are pretty radiant and fun to color at.

I quite honestly have no idea what miracles creator of this quote and quote game, had to go through to present us this nice demonstration
of NES maker's coloring book possibilities but he most certainly did achieve his goal quite nicely while not perfectly.

While this ain't exactly a game, it most certainly did achieve what it aimed to do and for that, huge props for the creator himself.

4/5

49.
Walter Nate Timeline Agent - Alldarn Davey

This is one of those cases where I'm wondering... Why did you present this when you had literally nothing to show off?
Sure, graphics are alright I suppose but com'on... Seriously... Com'on... I reach the end of the stage and nothing happens.

50.
Zack in Time

As for last and most certainly the least... Zack in time... Author, who ever.
Another game with wall of text I really do not care about...

Aaaaand it's a platformer game with horrifying graphics with color palettes that doesn't complement each other at all...
At least out of all the atrocities I've witnessed thus far when it comes to usage of color palettes this ain't the worst offender.
Game itself is almost as exciting as Snoopy for Commodore 64 and in comparison, even that game is actually more entertaining than this one.

To be fair, sure. Game works and it's mechanics seems to work... But it's simple... Way too simple and quite honestly... Not fun...

So who won? Who is the grand finale winner in my personal and brutal opinion?

*******************************
* CLAUDIA'S ADVENTURE *
*******************************

While the game itself ain't graphical or musical masterpiece it was really enjoyable and presented features I'd like to see in other games as well.
It has this certain degree of mystifying and capturing atmosphere which a lot of games lack in these days.

It was enjoyable to explore and gameplay was also pretty spot on as well.

So what did you win? This terribly drawn MS paint mermaid and my personal seal of approval. For what it's worth.

Congratulations!

> Cont 5/5

So readers and makers. What were your personal favorites and winners and on what basis?

Damn, that's a lot of dedication right there. This is the stuff I love to see, very nice write-up of all the entries! Criticism is always welcome in my book.

Wow, impressive.
Thank you Basty for all those awesome feedbacks.

Of course, for me the best game in Rescue Time, because it's my 8yo son's game ;) HAHA... I would be an awful dad if I would say otherwise.
I haven't played every games yet. But some of them have already impressed me.

Mad lad by the way you sent required to talk to any npcs at all in monster slayer only have to kill the 2 enemy’s in the town, I fixed the start screen, the original warp input didn’t work for some reason so I had to improvise, also thanks for the feedback on platycat btw I did both games with ing the mouth also a soundtrack for spirit impel idk most of the games I thought where pretty good but since your being brutally honest you can compare them to AAA games made today witch blows all these out of the water so yeah.

Wow, that's brutal. Though, did you ever consider the fact that some of these entries were probably made closer to the deadline and therefore didn't have the time to get developed/polished further? This is technically a game jam after all - making an empty demo is already pretty decent for something made in less than a week (in my case, 2~3 days).

Also the pallet cycleing is way to slow to cause a seizure, probably should have put my efforts into just 1 game to get a 3/5 score

I appreciate someone willing to say what they think. Any feedback is better than None, and negative feedback is infinitely more useful than "good job"

I can't speak on behalf of anyone whos game you reviewed, but Thanks for putting in the time!

Nice way to make new friends within the community, trash their games. You do know the majority of these games are by people trying out the software for the first time? Or better yet, are using the modules that had been given to them for said project. I'm going to stop here, I can feel my blood pressure rising. Good luck with your endeavors or whatever.

YES!! EVERY SINGLE ONE! Dwell down to the madness of my design!

Ha ha! Wow. Sorta shot myself on the foot with the Time Rescue didn't I?
But all things considered, if he got that much done already and featured an actual mechanic in a game at that age, he really might impress everyone of us in Byte Off 2021. :)

Ah the fatherly duties of loving your son no matter what.

Nah, it wouldn't be fair by any standard to compare these games to modern AAA games, which is why I used mostly NES games as a reference to give each and every game a fair shot.

Also the pallet cycleing is way to slow to cause a seizure, probably should have put my efforts into just 1 game to get a 3/5 score
It's not like any sort of official author scoring these reviews but it is always advisable to prioritize if you seek to impress.
At least now you have a year to hone your skills for 2021. :)

Wow!! Love the feedback! Thank you for taking the time to do this for all of us!
You are welcome. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Why thank you for you feedback.

Now while I was certain warning labels such as "Brutal" and
"If you are one of the sensitive types who doesn't like brutal honesty, I suggest you to look away and not read what I've got to say."
would have warned viewers of the impending doom ahead.

I will make sure to review every game that gains score below 3/5 with following phrase in 2021 Byte off;
"This game has that distinctive LJN style and features and an interesting gameplay mechanic."

This way I will be sure that the amount of friends I make will be infinite. :)

I was actually pretty lenient on the games with bugs and screen freezes since I was aware that around 90% of the time game creator wasn't responsible for them.
As for really short games... Well, I gave everyone pretty much equal chance regardless the time being used on making a game.
Some did manage to impress during that short time and some... Just didn't do so good.

Now if this would've been show-off where everyone would've had only 2-3 days to come up with something,
I would have adjusted reviews taking that in to consideration and this wouldn't have been brutal review at all.

I applaud the effort to play each entry, but I do not think the "brutal" approach is appropriate for a game jam-esque competition using a brand new version of the software, with many of the devs just trying to get their head around everything. But, like, live and let live.

Yeah, the problem with that is if I lower the octave it wouldn’t sound like a flute and if I lower the notes it won’t sound as good so imma try to just lower the volume of it, the nes sound chip is pretty wacky, anyway here is the new one https://clyp.it/ipd0jpcn

Now it doesn't actually sound half bad. Though I'd suggest using more Mega Man;ish tunes for finished version.
Those games has rather pleasing sound tunes overall.

But you're getting there.
