Making NES music with Real-time Recording

I'm new to this, but I'm not happy with the fact that neither FamiTracker nor FamiStudio seem to have any option for real-time recording. It's slow and tedious to add note timings, almost negating the value of having a real midi keyboard to use. Is there any other software out there that I could use to compose music with real-time recording, and then add it to my game?

If you use dn-famitracker and press enter while using the edit feature and play on the midi to write stuff in, and correct stuff later, other than that everything else exports in the wrong way

But....they....do. You plug the keyboard in and press "play" and it records your notes as it goes down the scroll. What am I missing here? It's in there. It's a function.

You're missing the "real-time" part. They record notes, but not durations. I want to record both notes and durations.

Sketch your songs in some other DAW, then export to MIDI and import that into FamiStudio or FamiTracker (0.4.2 is the newest FT version which supports it).
Note that "durations" are not really stored in the formats NESmaker/GGSound use, only the note on & off events are.

Thanks. I was looking for some downloadable program (DAW) that I could use; do you have any suggestions?

Some free DAWs for win/mac/linux include LMMS, Waveform Free, and Reaper (Unending trial). I think Ardour is free as well if you know how to compile it.
If you still want the tracker based workflow, OpenMPT can import, record, and export MIDI. The setup is a bit tricky, though.

This was very helpful, thanks again. Now I'm using Cakewalk by Bandlab to create the recordings, then exporting to MIDI and it works just fine. More people should be aware of this option. Trying to use FamiStudio to actually compose is just not ... musical!
