Hello everybody.

ENGLISH VERSION

I was talking with dale_coop a few days ago about an idea for our community.

As a french nintendo fan, I still have my old Club Nintendo Magazines and I know many european gamers still keep it preciously. USA had the famous Nintendo power. Even 20 years later, We still keep in mind the moment when we received it ^^

I am director of a publishing house, dedicated to video games and computing. We also publish games and OST. Our goal is to preserve video game and computing history and to show people how interesting were all these games nobody never talk about. In fact we are specialized in ultra niche subject.

This to quickly introduce me and prove I am serious with the following idea. But I need to know if it's completely stupid or really interesting. So, please, give me your opinion about the project.

What project ?

A Nesmaker club magazine.

The idea is to publish a paper magazine (perhaps also available online) to present Nesmaker, its community, its games etc.

We could publish a bimonthly magazine (every 2 months ;) ), let's say between 30-50 pages, A4 size (21*29.7cm), 100% in colours, and on a high quality paper.

What about the sections ?

We could put inside everything we can dream of :
-tutorials
-interviews of homebrewers
-links to homebrews pages/games/ ressources
-news
-contest
-game of the month
-comics► MistSonata as one of the artists.

etc.

What about the price ?

Hum, I am ok to sell it without any profit, but for 54 pages, it'll cost between 6 and 7€ (8US$) (perhaps less but we need to know how many units to produce).

What about the language ?

It'll be available in French and we can make it available in english if the community help us. Let me clarify : If we publish this mag, we'll make a french version AND an english version.

You need help ?

YES!

We would love to share this project with all the community.

The kind of help you could provide :

-ideas for the sections
-ideas for the contain of each issue
-articles you could write or help us to write(tutorials for example)
-interview you could give us (about your game, your work etc)

-TRANSLATION of articles in english, spanish or else

-any other suggestion !

Why a book, we already have FB and a forum !

Yeah, but a paper magazine is different :

-you'll have it in 20 years
-you will be able to read it in your bed
-it'll help you on subject you'll not necessarily find online
-it's something you can collect
-it has a part of nostalgia, like the nintendo magazine
-you can be in the magazine as author
-you can be in the magazine as someone who help the community
-with translated version of the magazine, everybody can read it with ease (english is great but sometime difficult for french or spanish or else)

In one word: we could make it an adventure and make Nesmaker something even better !

UPDATES

From here it's all about ideas, notes and suggestions !

We'll need to:

-offer an online version ► downloadable pdf / e-zine.

-offer the choice to give something for the project.

-include pages for comics, with for example MistSonata as one of the artists.

A physical magazine would be really cool, especially the nostalgia factor. I would subscribe.

I would suggest to just make it in English. More of the world knows English than French. It would appeal to more people, and save paper than having multiple languages.
(I don't know French anyway)

Also, we would definitely need a free e-zine version of it as well.
A web-based version would be easier to navigate, search, redirect/link, and translate (either a manually or by way of Google Translate).

Thanks ViperZang, but I see I was not clear ;)

If we publish this magazine, we'll make a french version AND an english version (and perhaps more). I'll correct it in my message.

Regarding the free e-zine, as I said, I think we'll do that too !

Yeah, I agree, having a free version would definitely open it up more. Maybe give users the option to download it with a suggested donation?
For the purpose of nostalgia (nestalgia?) I would be totally onboard with this!

Let me think about that... a magazine about NESMaker and NESMakers... and news on he hombrew community... All that on real paper!?
I don't know if kids know what are video games magazines anymore (they might think it's some YouTube channels or Instagram accounts :p)
Personally, I would love that!

I'm in!

The idea is nice, but I don't think many people would be interested in buying it, your market is pretty much limited to NES Maker users.

What would be more interesting, IMO, if the zine would take a form of a NES rom with articles in it, kinda like diskmags of old for several computer machines. But you'd need someone to write zine engine (can't be done with NM) so probably won't happen.

Anyway, point is that such thing would be better as a part of a larger publication directed towards retro gamers.

I fully support this idea, I've always wanted a print magazine about a subject I really love, and honestly from the sounds of it, this will be a high quality product. I would not mind paying 8 dollars an issue for this, especially since it sounds more like an independent venture, which is something I always love seeing/supporting.

Have you looked into how much this would cost?

I've published things before on a real press....there is a base price for labor, ink, paper, etc. that is several hundred dollars ($800 last I checked, probably more now), and then the number of copies you want lands on top of that to make the final price. The lowest print run you can make is a thousand. You've gotta make up the cost, so....are there a thousand people who would buy this?

If you're thinking in terms of self-publishing websites like Lulu or Amazon's CreateSpace, where each copy is produced as it is ordered, the cost would be more reasonable (in fact, putting it up for sale costs nothing).

It depends on your ambition. Is this something you want in stores? Then you want the bulk option, but negotiating with retailers is its own can of worms.

Cool idea, but it's beyond our competence.

Great, thanks. If we launch it, I garantee a quality product !

@Bucket Mouse

As I said, I am director of a publishing house and we published many books about video games. Believe me, We can publish this kind of thing. Of course we'll sell this magazine online only.
We don't use Lulu or Amazon's CreateSpace as we have our own printer. Just to give an example, we publish 2 quarterly magazines about retrogaming. Each one is more than 350 pages, full colours, high quality paper ;)

I think your missed something, Bucket Mouse... Kistune is director of a publishing company (dedicated to video games and computing : www.cotegamers.com).
He already prints books and magazines. It's his job.
So trust him, he knows well how it would cost ;)

No PB. Your post was about advices not criticism.

I was thinking of a name for this project. I like "Nesmaker Club" or simply "NesmakerS". But I am curious to see if we could cooperate with joe and his team to use something like that.
But, hey, At the moment, we are far from this part of the project

Even if "NESMaker club" is very cool (bring back so many memories)
I would vote for "NESMakers" !

I'll post some ideas of titles for each section later. I asked my team to find titles but it'll only be until we ask the community how we could name everything.

You know, my absolute favorite part of Nintendo Power was the comics. I'm not the best (or fastest) artist in the world, but I'd be happy to at least try making a comic or two for it.
