You know, my absolute favorite part of Nintendo Power was the comics. I'm not the best (or fastest) artist in the world, but I'd be happy to at least try making a comic or two for it.

Approved by the big director (yeaaa, it's me :D ).

I updated the first post to include this idea and your name ;)

Cool! If anyone has comic ideas, I'd love to hear about them.

What about a "nesmakers magazine mascot adventures" ? I can see this mascott trying to create a game and being caught by his creation. Has to live in his own game to find an exit ^^. Could use this mascot on each cover (famicom mag style).
Warp zone captain N style + dungeons + plateforms dangers + a princess (in another castle of course)... wooooowwwwww

What mascot? Was there a mascot previously discussed?

Actually, I'd love to see a twist on the "princess in another castle" trope where it's like "Another castle? No, the princess rescued herself about half an hour ago while you were doing sidequests..."

not ;) Just idea from my mad brain

It gives me this idea : parody of old games but with modern devices/ social network. For example, selfie of the princess in the castle while in jail. Sharing instagram pics of a dead koopa etc (mad brain, mad brain, call me mad brain !)

I doodled a little mockup of the comic idea. I'll have to brush up on the old NP comics again to get some inspiration though.

EDIT: for those who can't read my handwriting...

"Take that!"
"And that!"

"That was WAY too close!"
"Don't worry Princess, I'm--"

"...princess??"

"Aw, c'mon."
"Don't tell me she's in another castle!"
"Another Castle? No..."

"She rescued herself about half an hour ago... While you were doing side-quests."

~sigh~ "Cool, I guess..."

Princess: link, you are late

How about sprite comics using sprites supplied by the NES Maker gamedevs who want their characters to be shown in the comic? Sprite comics are much easier to do and can be just as good (I really recommend this one - while it's more 16bit era, I can't see why similar one with 8bit graphics can't work). It wouldn't even need to be self-contained either. And IMO it shouldn't - having ongoing storyline would encourage people to subscribe or continuously buy new issues.

Also, if you can release in Poland, I could translate for you (not for free though, I'm afraid).

You know, he wasn't supposed to be Link, but I definitely see the resemblance. I was thinking this scenario could be a sort of running gag with this character, where he keeps trying to rescue princesses and save the day, but ends up getting thwarted in funny ways.

But yeah, I was hoping to stick to more original stuff, or explore the concepts of games from other NESmakers. As much as I love Zelda and Mario and all the other Nintendo properties, I feel like making all the comics about them would just feel too tired.

This is a fairly fun idea. As someone who subscribed to Nintendo Power from 1988 until 1998 and as someone who wrote an article once for the short lived ScrewAttack digital magazine before the company was bought out by RoosterTeeth, I could see the appeal. Though also as someone who creates and self publishes print and digital player's guides as a hobby I also know how much hard work goes into such an endeavor. Especially if you plan to make it like the old Nintendo Powers/GamePro's where it was part mini players guides, part hype machine, part behind the scenes interviews. It's a really fun idea, but can also be tedious and daunting if you plan to do one every month or every 2 months and also have enough content to fill each issue.

Exactly, begin the scenes interviews, of developers/composers/artists... it would be the VERY interesting!
(Like, I don't know if you guys listen the The Assembly Line podcast, but love it for all those homebrewer interviews)

Our idea is to publish this kind of contents. We have an advantage as we already are publishing this kind of content in our main books/magazines.

I just stumbled upon this thread. It's a great idea! I just hope it can be practical with a very limited audience. I'm unsure how many licenses have been sold, but if you think you can pull this off without breaking the bank, then great!

This is my first exposure to the world of developing video games, so I'm not sure of what resources are out there. But I have to imagine that the majority of the others are the same. So features on coding or music development for beginners would be great.

I like pictures. I like seeing some of the imaginative visuals that people have done thus far, especially since many of us still do not have a fully functional engine, much less a completed game. But graphics are easy to share at this stage.

MistSonata, your comic is adorably cute! I do like the idea of a comic based on Joe's tutorial characters (Whatever happened to that bearded guy?) as well as currently in development games (Am I hinting at a turtle cameo? Mmmmaybe. :) )

I have noting to add ;)
What I have in mind is exactly what you want to see ;)

The only thing is that we'll need nesmakers to collaborate with us, to share experience etc.

I would love to be a part of this somehow. My French is weak, but I have a lot of experience with technical writing in English. I'm also a Nesmaker content creator and wouldnt mind showcasing or whatnot.

I think we'll make something like a "sign to be a part of the magazine" soon ;)
No obligation, no money needed, only the will to help sometimes.
And of course we'll make this english-friendly !
