I put this in my WIP thread about a week ago but I guess I didn't officially drop it in here!
This is my Version .01 Alpha DEMO. Its unfair, buggy as all hell, and you will probably die. lol

Its just the first level to get some feedback on how I'm doing - so if you see something don't be afraid to speak up. Part of the problem of building a project like this is that you tend to miss little things that others spot immediately. :)

Here is a link to the Demo:

For those of you who perfer to watch people play I did my own playthrough:

Yeah the indeedly is pretty bugged. At one point I couldn't swing my sword as if the earth itself would've swallowed it.
But bugs aside, it was pretty alright. Sword animation is nice plus it's a good thing that sword is as long as it is and music, while not great is alright.

Not too big fan of the slippery controls though, it's nice that the character gains momentum but stopping him feels like I'm on ice so I'd personally suggest you'll at least halve the stopping momentum. Also, after I died the game just stopped there so I didn't bother to play it longer than few screens since I didn't want to start spamming quick saving.

There are few graphical glitches here and there but you were probably aware of them already.

Thanks for the feedback @Basty - I thought I got all the weird bugs. Any idea what you were doing when it got eaten?

also when you died what did you die to? The game is supposed to “die” and reset after 3 seconds. You may have triggered something that I hadn’t anticipated.

The controls are an easy adjustment. I. The next version I’ve tweaked a few things in that department.

Thanks for running through it :)

"Any idea what you were doing when it got eaten?"
I was jumping around and swinging ma sword then then it just stopped working for some reason.

"also when you died what did you die to?"
Archer shot me with a rock and that was it. Player just didn't respawn and I waited for a good minute.

Managed to recreate both - looks like the monster "rock" was resetting the death sequence over and over and it was timed just perfectly to screw up the continue point.

The Sword is a pain. It looks like its ignore the variable reset if you collide with the roof at the same time that the player is switching action steps. I'll work on this one. Thank you again @Basty !

There is a lot of great stuff here, but what I'm most impressed by is how smooth your game plays. I am also using the metroVania module, and I have a big problem with the player getting hit out of nowhere. Sometimes the screen also loads solid tile collisions where they shouldn't be. I didn't experience any of those bugs in your game.

One thing I wondered about though, is why you chose to have such pixelated characters in a NES game. You're obviously a great pixel artist. I guess it's an art style, I just wish the characters were more detailed. Oh well. That's just me. The backgrounds and the cutscene looks amazing!

All in all I'm very impressed by what you've done here. You have interesting level design and bosses, and I didn't experience a single of those bugs I have in my game. Both the melee and the long range attacks works like a charm. Good job on the start screens too by the way! Very professional. I'm looking forward to the finished result.

Thanks @baardbi ! It was definitely a deliberate choice. The games characters are all based off a webcomic used to write years ago. So the characters are supposed to reflect that. I appreciate the compliment on my pixel art I have alot of fun mixing it up :)

There are many bugs that you need to work around with the metroidvania module. For your solid tile issue try not putting any solids on the screen edges. It will most likely eliminate that problem for you :)
