The demo that won Best Narrative and Best soundtrack in the Byte-Off III competition just got a major update!!!!

PLAY THE DEMO HERE

GIT.png

In this Game, you play as CHAD GRANITE supermodel / chemist who is working on an immortality serum, when disaster strikes in the form of a mad bomber. In this first chapter, You are tasked with stopping the villain by chasing after him room by room. But look out! Every time you enter a new room, you are blown to bits and must re-assemble all your parts in order to revive yourself and continue the chase.

I'm posting this thread because I have added a lot of new features and bugfixes to the demo, and I am working towards a full release soon. Any bug reports and feedback would be appreciated. Especially any criticism, I have thick skin, I can take it!

new features not included in the original byte-off demo:

  • extra levels designed to help players learn the game easier
  • animated tiles
  • chapter and level select screens
  • various menu screens
  • 3 difficulty settings that alter the gameplay
  • an incomplete bonus minigame called "Farty Butt"
  • improved level layouts
  • improved graphics
  • ability to throw your head when in certain forms
  • advanced pause menu
  • level indicator in hud
  • coding fixes, including check to prevent players from getting stuck in low ceilings
  • much much more!!

ha - just played through the new version. Love it - also the bonus game inspired by Flappy :D
Couple of things that I noticed:

1) The text at the top - the second row of text is too close to the first row. There is no space between the rows which makes it sometimes difficult to read.

2) I thing I was not able to jump when I was standing on one of these crates that you can destroy with your hands.

3) Not sure if difficulty select does anything. Haven't noticed any differences.

4) Once after selecting hard difficulty and back on the main menu - I wasn't able to press any buttons. Not sure if that was a retroverse problem or rom problem. Had to reset the game.

Great game!

1: I suppose I could play with shortening up the text by 1 pixel to create a gap.

2: I'll double check my jump code, i might have forgotten to allow jumping on a particular ground type.

3: the Hard difficulty doesnt change much yet. just a slightly shorter time limit. Easy mode however re-arranges the placement of the body parts to make each level much simpler.

4: I'll have to look into that lockup. Don't know what could possibly do that, as it uses the nesmaker input stuff.

Hi mate. I just got it together for the first time!

The concept is brilliant. I love that each combination has different abilities and you don't spoon feed that info in the game. A few things that stood out. You may have already sorted these things, not sure how old the demo is. Most of this stuff is visual and personal taste.

- Agree with Peter about the text. It would be a lot nicer with a 'white space' around.

- There a weird bug with pausing. If you hold pause button while on "get ready" screen then again in the game, it gets in a loop trying to pause and unpause.

- You could make the trans colour black before warping so it's all a bit more streamlined. Sometimes screen flashed green, sometimes white etc. I have to do this in my own game as mine is not black. I make it black just for the warp.

- I'm not a massive fan of the ghost to pick up first body part. It feels a bit clunky (to me). I'd much prefer and arrow above the body part and then cycle though with left and right (like your settings menu). You could expand on this arrow indicator to remind player to press down when at a body part too. You'd maybe need some way to indicate to the player you don't have a body part yet too (like screen going to black and white for example)

You asked for it! Hope this is ok.

An Instant classic! Awesome improvements!
Those bouncing body parts are absolutely perfect on the BOOM screen.
The one thing that is slightly off putting for me is the bouncing body parts on the main menu.
It kind of overshadows that nice menu you got going on there. Either way, it takes nothing away from the fun of this game.;)
Keep rocking! I look forward to the completion.

played through it and the text is so much better now. Haven't noticed anything now. Still a blast to play ;) Nice pause menu is a nice addition as well as the level counter. By the way - I love the shadow that gets bigger the closer you are to the ground!

It looks very interesting. I hope there will be a lesson for this technique. I can already see how to use it at the boss level.
