How to make a game like Space Invaders or Galaga?

Hi guys, is it possible to make a shooter like Space Invaders, where instead of scrolling left to right and shooting straight your ship shoots upwards in a static screen. The shotter module seems very nice to make a game like Gradius, but I wonder if it's possible to make it work like a Space Invaders clone.
