Santa's Bad Trip


Hey hello fellow NESmakers !

Wanted to share my WIP : Santa's Bad Trip
This is a Remake or Demake of the failed kickstarter game

SANTA'S magical Christmas Sleigh​

Instead of a SMB 3 platform type game. We are going for the Conker's Bad Fur Day approach here.

The Story :

Santa was delivering presents and got some milk and cookies along the way.
But wait a minute these are no ordinary cookies. Santa ate some marijuana cookies !
Oh no ! Those bad kids ...
Santa passed out in the living room under the Christmas tree. And to make things even worse...He's having a Bad Trip !

The Game :

We are making a MetroidVania 4.5.9 type of game here.
There is no way up ( Game doesn't like that ) So Santa is walking left, right, warping around and going down.

The goal of the game ? There is no princess to save. No tutorial and no obvious objective.
Santa is walking around, stuck in his own head and in the bad trip in this NES game... so ANYTHING can happen.
The game should have a Conker / Bad Santa type feel. Santa is the good guy and jolly. The world he's in is just crazy.


This is a nice excuse to throw all kind of things in my game and try a lot of stuff and learn to work with newsmaker.


Things I Need To Do and learn :

- Create more screens ( graphics )

- import Christmas song and sound effects. (learn)

- create NPC's and text ( Zelda old man tips and just weird / strange Christmas movie quotes and video game references. (learn)

- create boss battles (learn)


Progress :

I already have a huge game area ( lots of screens ). Santa can walk around and throw snowballs ( projectiles ).
The game needs some more enemies on screen.

I believe I already saw a NPC and textbooks tutorial video somewhere.
So my biggest problem is making 1 screen boss battles ( duck tales / mega man type ) Need to search that on the forum.
Any help or comments are appreciated.

Seems really cool, I can’t really give to much help with bosses but try taking a look into monster blocks, they can be really good at keeping the player trapped till the kill a guy in a room

a little update :

I got more screens
Famitracker songs+ sound effects are in the game.

to do list :

- create more enemies
- create boss
- give enemies explode animation + sound effect
- give enemies health / more hitpoints

- create pickups ( green coins or candy )

help needed :

How do you give enemies or bosses more hit points in the metroidvania module ? I can't seem to find the info or tutorial for this ??

Ps is there a way to make a rom out of your game or do you have to flash a cartridge ? I can't seem to find a way for this and ROM is to short for the search mode on this website.

Development :

The game development goes a different way then I wanted it to go. My game goes more in the direction of MC kids and daze before Christmas then conker bfd.
Does this happen to more nesmakers ? along the way the game goes it's own way it seems.

Your game IS a ROM. NESmaker exports the ROM file to both the GameEngineData and Emulator folders. The filename is game.nes. You can copy and rename it however you wish.

Man, I should get my sleeping cycle back together, I read "Satan's bad trip" >_<;

Anyways, graphics looks really good thus far. Sprite is big and it is easy to tell what I am looking at.
Also backgrounds and usage of colors are really appealing and easily recognizable.

Overall, what I'm looking thus far, seems really pleasing to the eyes.
