Trouble setting up the Emulator

Hello, I've watched almost 3 hours of tutorials and scoured the forums but so far have not seen an answer to the question on how to set up the emulator. I am having a problem compiling and I believe it is because the emulator is not set up correctly. I do not have a working directory because I do not have a game.nes file. Where does this come from? I've never run the emulator or the NES maker before until today. Sorry if this seems basic but I'm new to all this and am understanding the tools, but can't get it to compile to test what I have.

If it’s the native emulator (that comes with NESMaker).
You can’t set up with the “esc” key.
Else I would recommand you fceux.
